Goal:

 

Improve student learning by incorporating performance based writing in all content areas. Improved achievement in writing will be measured using the spring 2001 MSPAP.  The local school improvement plan has set the goal of having 40% of third grade students meeting the satisfactory standard in writing.  A target of 10% of third grade students meeting the excellent standard has also been established.

 

This multimedia project using Microsoft Powerpoint is designed for staff development.

 

 

Content Standards:

  1. Students will demonstrate positive attitudes toward reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  2. Students will demonstrate their ability to read, write, listen, and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences, in a variety of forms and situations.
  3. Students will demonstrate their ability to use skills and strategies to construct, extend, and examine meaning.

Project Summary:  Writing to Inform – “Wax Museum”

 

Students will read a biography and research relevant information on a famous American.  Students play the role of a wax model and write to inform a peer audience the highlights and significant events of their famous American.  Students will use Inspiration to organize notes, use writing strategies such as F-TAP and CUPS to refine writing, and use Kidpix Studio to create an accompanying slideshow of their famous American.

 

Objectives/Desired Results (What will the learners understand as a result of this project?)

 

1. Students will select and read a biography of a famous American.

2. Students will use the internet to research biographical data on their famous  

  American.

3. Students will write to inform a peer audience the highlights and significant events in the

    life of their famous American.

4. Students will use Inspiration to organize notes and research, then prepare a brief speech

    for the Wax Museum.

5. Students will use writing strategies (F-TAP and CUPS) to refine writing.

6. Students will use Kidpix Studio to create a slideshow of their famous American.

 

Plans for Facilitation:

 

  1. Provide biographies of famous Americans.

 2. Assess student proficiency in using writing strategies (F-TAP and CUPS).

 3. Assess student proficiency in using Inspiration, Kidpix slideshow, and the

    Internet.

 4. Students will read a biography of their famous American.

 5. Students will research their famous American.

 6. Students will organize collected information using Inspiration.

 7. Students will share collected information with a partner using Paired Verbal

    Fluency.

 8. Students will use writing strategies to inform a peer audience about their

    biography and famous American.

 9. Students will role play their famous American at a Wax Museum.

10. Students will create and showcase a Kidpix slideshow featuring their famous

    American.

11. Students will be evaluated on the Wax Museum presentation and slideshow

        presentation using rubrics.
