Student Teacher Begins
Please join me in
welcoming our new student teacher Mrs. Monica Matthews. Monica is a student at
Salisbury State University. She is studying to become a teacher. She is hoping
to teach third grade someday. She will be our second teacher for the next few
months. Mrs. Matthews will be teaching many of our lessons and I will be
assisting her. I think she will make a great teacher.

Mathematics Challenge
The Studious Sharks Team
had a special switch day on February 8 where students switched classes. Their
goal for the day was to work as a team to create a Math board game. The game
had to have rules that would be fair for everyone. Students had to write their
own clear set of directions. The games reinforced skills such as
multiplication, division, and even time and money. The games will be shared
throughout the five classes. What a fun day that was! Maybe you can create your
own math game. If you do a nice job, I will include it with our recess games.
Sharpen Those Skills
There are many things you
can do to help your child improve their writing skills. First, have your child
keep a journal at home. Encourage your child to write in it regularly. They can
write about a book they have been reading, something they are learning in
school, a family gathering or a creative story. Have your child read their
writing to you. Together you and your child can make improvements. Think about
adding details to paint a picture in someone’s mind or add examples to support
statements made in their writing. Also work with your child to proofread the
writing for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. These tips are
sure to help improve your child’s writing skills.

Read! Read! Read!
Don’t forget to read 20
minutes every night. Record the book titles and your opinion of the book on
your Reading Log.
Math Marvels
Mrs. Matthews has been
doing an awesome job teaching fractions. You can practice fractions at home!
Next time your family orders a pizza, decide how it has been divide. Instead of
saying that you ate 3 slices, you can say you ate 3/8 of the pizza. Try using a
fraction the next time you share cookies with your friend. Your friend will be
impressed.

The Incredible ECON
We’ve started our new
SocialStudies unit, Econ and Me. It is a unit about economics. There are many
key concepts to learn. Students will be learning about concepts like goods and
sevices, human, natural, and capital resources, and producers and consumers.
Check out the Student Fun Page for an
activity with some economics vocabulary words.

Just the Facts Please!
Memorize your
multiplication facts. See if you can be the first to “Travel” around the world.
CTBS TESTING
This year, all students at
Bayside will be taking the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills. The test will be
given on March 5-8 during the first two hours of the day. Please be sure your
child gets a good night sleep each night and eats a healthy breakfast in the
morning. The test will start promptly at 9:15 so it is important that your
child arrives to school on time. The test assesses skills taught in grades 1-3.
Each student will receive individual scores near the end of the school year. If
you have any additional questions, feel free to give me a call.

World Wide Web
Have you been visiting the
class web site? Check it out! There are some great educational links on the
About the Class page. These are fun places to visit as a family on rainy days.
Try going to one of these sites. You might learn something new. There are many
sites that reinforce math skills. Send me an E-mail and let me know what you
think about the links and that you visited the site. My E-mail link is on the
homepage. I have also added several work samples for you enjoyment.
