Who's Room is it Anyway?

Introduction

Sharon and her family have lived in their home since she was born.  She and her younger brother, Lawrence, have shared a room since he was three.  Their room was all right, but it just did not look like her room.  When she wanted to do certain things in the room she had to always rearrange either the furniture or her things to be able to use them.  Using her computer that she got was the hardest.  Every night she had to move Lawrence's bureau to allow her printer to print her assignment out.  Sharon didn't want to complain because she knew her family was working hard to provide for everyone.  Sharon would think about how she would have her room  one day.  Collecting articles and pictures about decorating a room was an activity Sharon enjoyed.  She had pictures and drawings everywhere on the wall.   Some of her designs were practical so she could easily use everything in her room.  Some of her room designs were just in style or hip.  Then it happen her mother told them at dinner that they were moving to a larger place and she would have her own room.  She could hardly believe her ears, she thought she was dreaming.  Sharon could hardly eat.  After dinner she ran to the room and grabbed all the pictures and drawings off the wall.  As she looked over her collection of room designs, she realized that it was not going to be an easy decision.  She had categorize her designs and had basically four groups of room designs.  The first group were functional rooms, designed to easily use everything in the room.  The second group were practical rooms, designed to allow changes to the room easily as her needs changed.  She would not be playing with her Barbie Doll's house all her life.  The next group were comfortable rooms, designed to make her feel at ease when she is in it.  The last group were in style rooms, designed with the latest things.  What would be the best for her, aesthetic or functional?

What would you do?

Put yourself in Sharon's place.  If you were her what type of room would you design?  Just imagine that you will be moving in a new room.  Your family gave you a budget to stay within so you can fix your room anyway you want it to be.  What you have to keep in mind is that you will not be able to make major changes to the room again, and you must remain with in certain guidelines.  You also have to write instructions and directions as to what you want your room to look like.  So your family can work on it while you are away at your aunt's house for the summer.  Your task today is to look on the web for information about room designs and based on your notes write detail instructions and directions so that someone else could design your room.

Determine your options

From the resources listed find out information about decorating a room.  Select the style, find paint or wall coverings select furniture are you going to change the shape of the room.  Where are they to go in your new room.   Your parameters. Your new room is 8' by 10' and rectangle shaped.  Your Budget is $4,000.  After you have collected information determine how you would want your room to look.  Make a design drawing of how your room would look to hand in.  Include with your drawing the reason you picked that design.  Was it for functionality, comfort, practicality or stylish reasons.  You may work in pairs to do the research, however each one must turn in individual work.  Some of you will be using the design worksheet while others will use the design software.  Finally, you will create instructions and directions so one of your classmates can recreate your dream room, you are to use words only.
