Introduction

1999 was an infamous year. Massive hurricanes, deadly tornadoes and treacherous floods were just a few of the natural disasters that the United States encountered. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)  provided support and services for over 2 million victims, but many lives were still lost.  In January of 2000 a meeting was held in Washington D.C. to discuss the effects of  the disasters. They discovered that many people are not informed on the severity of natural disasters and how to survive them. This year FEMA is organizing a task force of middle school students to educate the public before disaster strikes again!!!

Task

Your job is to create either a web page, brochure or poster  that informs citizens on how to prepare for a natural disaster. Your packet must include three before, during, and after tips on surviving the disaster and an example of a family action plan. The family action plan should be a paragraph describing specific steps your family would take if this disaster happened to you. This plan can be written in steps or in paragraph form and should include at least 2 examples from the text. To begin your project, click a few natural disasters that interest you. Then chose one that you would like to do your project on.

                                      Hurricanes    Tornadoes

The Process

  Step 1

Now that you have chosen your disaster, it is time to begin your research. Using the graphic organizer provided, record your research. (Remember that you are looking for before, during and after tips as well as information for creating your family action plan.) Click on to your disaster.

                                  Hurricanes      Tornadoes

Before you continue reading step 2, make sure that all of your information is completely filled out in your graphic organizer.

Step 2
Your next decision revolves around designing your information project. You have a choice of either making a web page, brochure or poster. Examples of brochures and posters are hanging up in Mrs. Culler's room.
Since text features have been the main focus of our unit, you will be expected to use at least 5 text features in your project. Think about the role they play when you are organizing and presenting information. (For example, would you find a title at the bottom of the page?) When you have decided, use a blank piece of white paper to sketch out your ideas. All sketches have to be approved by Mrs. Culler before you begin your final project. If you are interested in making a web page, you must make an appointment with Mrs. Culler to discuss your plans.

Step 3
You are now ready to begin your final project. You should have a clear picture in your mind of what you want your final project to look like. You should also have all of your information written down on your graphic organizer, and all of the supplies  (markers, poster board, scissors glue, etc...) necessary.  Now get to work because America's citizens are counting on you.

Congratulations! FEMA was so impressed with your project that they have decided to use it in their disaster training workshop. Because of you, many people will now be prepared to survive the next disaster. If you are interested in learning about any other disasters that were covered click here!
