Go to the M.C. Escher website.

From the information given on the first page and in the library and art museum sections of the site, answer the following questions:

 

1. What country was M.C. Escher from and when did he live?

2. What was Escher's first graphic work?

3. What was the name of Escher's first regular division of the plane?

4. Where was Escher's first one man exhibition?

5. Why did the Eschers have to move to the Netherlands?

6. Sketch one example of Escher work in each area and explain why it fits in that area.:

a. Repeating patterns

b. Mathematically complex structures

c. Spatial perspectives

7 & 8. Answer any two of the questions at the bottom of the first (home) page of the Escher site.

9. Why was Escher "studied and greatly appreciated" by mathematicians?

10. Click on the link "Escher from the Internet." Sketch the one of the computer generated works shown there that you feel is most like Escher's work. Justify your choice.
