Terrific Transformations

Now it's your turn. You too can create beautiful patterns using shapes and colors and what you have learned about transformations.

Here's what you need to do:

The Task

The Process

First Task

Make Transformations

Remember what you learned about the different kinds of transformations? Now it is time to practice them, using Geometer's Sketchpad. Read and follow the Geometer's Sketchpad directions so you will know what to do. Be sure to print out and hand in your completed exercise by the end of the period. Then print out a copy of the transformation organizer. Find a partner and organize the different kinds of transformations together, filling in the chart as you go. Write both partners' names on the paper and turn it in.

Second Task

Find directions

Now you need to visit a wonderful website by Suzanne Alejandre. On it, you will learn all about how to make tessellations in HyperStudio - if you can find the directions!

Print the directions out when you find them!

Third Task

Create Tessellations

Now the best part. You are going to go to HyperStudio and create two tessellations of your very own. Be sure to check the rubric page so you know what you need to do.

Fourth Task

Describe Tessellations

Now you need to explain how you made your tessellation to everyone else. Use Power Writing so you remember to get all the details. Check the rubric too, so you make sure you include all necessary elements.

The End: Reflection Time!

Wow, you've done it! While it may not have made you decide to end up an artist, think about what you have learned. Look at the tessellations other students have made and think of the discussion your class had about their tessellations. Now you have an idea of why people try to copy and create new patterns and why and how they manipulate the shapes they use to get the patterns they want.
