Your child will be involved in our spelling program to help him/her learn spelling patterns, chunks, and memory words.  Each night your child will have homework that experiments and explores written language.  Your child should spend ten to fifteen minutes per night working on this homework.
Please make this a fun time for your child.

MONDAY: Chunk List
Your child will have a list of ten words that were chosen based on their needs.  For tonight’s homework have your child focus only on the weekly chunk.  Have your child create a list of five additional words that follow this chunk. If your child has already mastered the chunk, this would be a good opportunity to challenge your child to use a dictionary or experiment with various beginnings and endings such as “pre-, re-, -ly, -ed, -ing, -tion, -able, -ent, or -er.”  You may also encourage your child to expand his words to include compound words with the chunk.  The list of five words should be written in the spelling book.

TUESDAY:  Alphabetical Order
Have your child put his/her spelling words in alphabetical order.  They should list the words in the correct order in their spelling book.  Each word should be written two times for practice.

WEDNESDAY:  Spelling Folder
Choose one of the spelling activities listed on the outside of the folder.  Have some fun with these activities and include other members of your family.

THURSDAY:  Practice for test
(Copy, Cover, Try, Check)
Your child will receive a practice paper each week to use in their Copy, Cover, Try, Check folder.   Have your child copy the first spelling word, cover with the flap, lift the second flap and try to spell the word with out looking.  Finally, lift both covers to check if the word was spelled correctly.  If the word is correct put a smiley face in the last column.  Repeat the process until all the words have been practiced.  The practice sheets should be returned to school on Friday to be collected.

FRIDAY: Test

Thank you for supporting your child’s education!
