Introduction

For this activity your group will:

• collect information about a topic
• make a graph of your information
• make a slide show
• share the slide show with the class
• write a letter to persuade

Objectives:

• Collect, organize and display information (data)
• Look for patterns and make predictions
• Use problem solving strategies
• Communicate mathematically

Task 1: Plan - Create a way to collect your data

1. Choose one of the following problem solving strategies to create a
    way to collect data on your topic.

• Make a table (include choices and a place to collect the data)
• Make an organized list (list of choices for your topic with place to collect data)
• Create a questionaire (a set of questions for students to answer about your topic)

2. Now, make your survey!

3. Next, decide who you will survey.

Show your teacher your survey before going on.

Task 2: Solve - Collect your data
1.  Choose one of the following ways to collect your data.
 

• Visit classrooms to ask for data
• Send a copy of the survey to each student
• Send a copy of the survey to the teacher to collect data

2. Now get your data!

3.  You will use your data to create a graph using the Graph Club program.

• What kind of graph will you make?  Bar graph, pictograph, line plot or circle graph
• Go back to "At Ease" and click on "Graph club"
• Create your graph!

Task 3: Look Back - Interpret Graph

1.  Now your group will create your Kid Pix slide show.   Each person in the group should complete at least one page for your slide show.  Choose one person in your group to save all your work.  Sign in on the computer using that student's name so that the page you create can be saved.

Your group slide show will have:

• Title Page
• Survey Plan (tells how you collected your data)
• Graph Page
• Summary Page (a paragraph telling about your graph)
• Prediction Page (What do you think you would find if you surveyed other students?)
• What now? (explain what you think should be changed in our school from your survey)

Writing challenge!
Now that you have all the information on your topic and
your slide show is done : SO WHAT?

For this challenge you will be writing a letter to persuade someone in our school to make changes that would make our school better.  Use the information in your slide show to write your letter. Think about FATP and use the rubric.
