Books, books, books! I had found the secret of a garret room Piled high with cases in my father's name, Piled high, packed large -- where, creeping in and out Among the giant fossils of my past, Like some small nimble mouse between the ribs Of a mastodon, I nibbled here and there At this or that box, pulling through the gap, In hearts of terror, haste, victorious joy, The first book first. And how I felt it beat Under my pillow, in the morning's dark, An hour before the sun would let me read! My books!
- Elizabeth Barrett Browning Aurora Leigh
It is this same sense of discovery and celebration that this assignment challenges the two of you to share. Together, you are to select and read one book. This can be any title, any genre, or any period of literature that you choose. The only requirement in terms of the book selected is that both readers be excited about reading the text! (See Ms. Kajder if you need suggestions.) As you read, you will need to, again together, keep a dialogue journal in which you discuss and consider the book, its themes, its characters, and the ideas which it extends. To do so, divide a sheet into two columns. The left is for the comments, questions, and ideas of one reader. The right is meant for the response, comments, questions, and ideas of the second reader. If it works better for the dialogue between the two readers to be captured in more of a letter format, that is fine so long as the questions and comments offered by one reader are addressed in the response of the second. You will need a minimum of ten total entries. A possible approach would be to complete one entry per chapter read. The key is to be as insightful a reader and a responder as you can. Remember, these are journal entries so the grammar and spelling are not as essential as the ideas within the writing. However, you don't want errors to interfere with the meaning you are trying to convey! You will be assessed on the thoughtful nature of your comments as well as the completion of the required entries. Students, it is recommended that you keep these entries separate from your English journal. It is important to keep on top of the reading as entries will be considered within classroom discussion throughout the period of time in which you will be reading.
DIALOGUE JOURNALS ARE DUE, COMPLETED, BY ___________________________. THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE WORTH A POSSIBLE 40 POINTS.
