Students will:


 

Introduction:

             The Howard County Association has been granted $ 2 million dollars to build a 25 acre Zoological Park.  The park desires a diverse population of species representing the Animal Kingdom and the various Biomes. You are an active member of the Wildlife Association  and asked to be on the planning committee for the Zoological Park.  You and your colleagues will make a presenation to the Zoological Planning Committee detailing your recomendatons. Each one of you is asked to recommend  two species and their respective habitats to most fully represent the Animal Kingdom. (See Memo)


 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Task:

        You are leading experts in Wildlife animals and your job is to present a recommendation, as a group with one habitat and the animals that belong to it.  Your groups proposal must include three phylum  in the Animal Kingdom and represent at least two species from six different classes in each of the three chosen phylum . Recommendations need to include both the common name and scientific name.


 
 
 
 
 
 


Schedule
Classes are 90 minutes each, 4x4 schedule
 

Day 1
Read Memo,  Form Habitat groups
Break into pairs for phylum assignment
Research with partner on phylum
Day 2
Complete research on the phylum 
Meet with your partner to choose which two classes you want to research- (two animals each) 
Day 3
 Complete research individually on two animals in your chosen class .
 Meet back with partner at the end of class
Day 4
Prepare slides for presentations 
 Meet as a whole habitat group, construct whole presentation and practice order.
Day 5
 Presentations to the Zoological Planning Committee

Day 1

 
Read Memo
List of Habitats

 
Complete the top 2 boxes of the Habitat Fact Sheet:

Once each person in the group has completed the two top boxes, discuss as a group what you already know about your Habitat and what you might  want to learn about the Habitat.  Spend about ten minutes.

Select a person in your Habitat group to be your partner.  The two of you will begin to research a phylum in the Animal Kingdom that is appropriate to their given habitat. Be sure to look at the Animal Kingdom Flowchart to get an overall picture.

After you have completed research on your chosen phylum, compare notes with you partner.  Each person needs to decide on which class they would like to research.

For the remaining of the class research as much information you can using the Internet, books, Encyclopedias, and CD-ROMs.

Day 2

 
 
After you have completed research on your chosen phylum, compare notes with you partner.  Each person needs to decide on which class they would like to research.

Complete the bottom half of the Habitat Fact Sheet individually on Day 2 and Day 3.


 
 


 
 
Day 3

 


Complete Habitat Fact Sheet by the middle of the period.

 Meet with your partner to discuss the Class you have chosen and the animals found in it.

The last twenty minutes of class, meet with the whole habitat group to discuss the animals found in your habitat.

If time permits begin your presentation slides.


 
 

 
 
 


 
 
Day 4

 
 


Prepare slide for your presentations (Individually).

Criteria for slides:

       Number of slides- between three to four
       At least two pictures of the animals 
       (one clip art and from another source)
       Slide transitions
       Animated text

The last twenty minutes of class meet with your Habitat group to discuss the order of

Conclusion:
