Hello. I am Mrs. Mitchell. I have been a teacher in Anne Arundel County for 26 years. For the first eight years I was a classroom teacher at Maryland City Elementary School. There I was a science teacher for 4th, 5th and 6th grades. For the last 18 years I have been teaching as a media specialist in these schools: Oakwood Elementary, Quarterfield Elementary, Overlook Elementary, and Waugh Chapel Elementary. I will be the media specialist at the new Piney Orchard Elementary School when it opens in September 2000. As I have been involved in the renovation of two media centers, I am very excited about opening this brand new school with the new equipment and books which I selected. I have been interested in technology as a part of education since the early 1980's when I first used a Commodore computer in the media center. At the new school I will be working with a fully networked PC lab and media center. This will be exciting for me as I have only worked with Macs and in a stand alone lab. I am excited about this challenge for my last few years of teaching.
I earned a BS degree in Education and a masters degree in Library and Informational Services both from the University of Maryland at College Park. Throughout these 26 years I have been involved in taking computer classes and teaching technology skills to students, parents and teachers. I was a Fellows at the Maryland Technology Academy at Towson University during the summer of 2000. In the future I hope to be more involved in staff development in the technology field.
I have two children, a son and a daughter, and three grand children. My husband and I now live in Laurel with our cat, Smokey but enjoy frequent visits from our children and grandchildren as they all live near by. We still like to do many things together as a family.
I enjoy needlework such as quilting, counted crosstitch and sewing. I also enjoy listening to books on tape and reading children's books. My favorite children's authors are Chris Van Allsburg and Cynthia Rylant.
My favorite place is the beach. I was raised at Kure Beach, North Carolina, and I still prefer spending my day sitting on the beach and swimming in the ocean. That is where I hope to live when I retire.
