The book that I read was Doris Day:Her Own Story by A.E. Hotchner.
Doris Day is known for her extraordinary singing and dancing abilities.Doris
was named in honor of her mother's favorite actress in 1924,Doris Kenyon.
"When Doris was about 8 years old she remembers her parents hosting a big
party and her father was hanging around a tall and slender women.Later
that night Doris found out that her father was having a affair with a women, who
turned out to be her mother's best friend.Soon after her mother found out
they separated and eventually divorced.
Doris' mother enrolled Doris in a dance class where her and her partner,Jerry,
were well known. They entered many contests and in one they won a
grand prize $500.00.With the money their parents decided to take a trip
to Hollywood and enroll them in the nationally famous dance school Fanchon
and Marco. Their teacher,Louis De Pron, loved their dance routine and sent
them to perform in and around Hollywood. On October 13 their friends held
a good-bye party for them.Doris's boyfriend took her out to get a hamburger. On
their way there the car they were riding in was hit by a train and Doris'
right leg was shattered. With her injury her and Jerry were not able to
continue their dancing and Doris was not able to continue school. When her
leg had finally started to mend she was trying to dance with her crutches
and slipped and fell and rebroke her leg.Since she couldn't dance she started
singing instead.Doris then started taking singing lessons. Her teacher,Grace
Raine, got Doris a spot on a local radio station.Grace's husband was a song
plugger who told her about a chinese restaurant who needed a singer so,
Doris auditioned for the part and got it.She would now sing weekends at
the Shanghai Inn.Then a man named Barney Rapp asked Doris to join his band
"Barney Rapp and his New Englanders",Doris accepted. This is where she met
her first husband, Al Jorden.
Al would take Doris home after performances, this is where she also learned
about his uncontrollable anger.Doris and Al soon started dating and then
got married. Before you knew it she was pregnant with their first and only
child. When he was told about this his beatings got worse and worse. Finally, the
time came for her to have the baby and her plan was to go live with her
mother and start a divorce.Things did not go the way she had planned though.Al
ended up quitting the band and going back to Cincinnati with Doris and
Terry. Then one day Doris changed the locks of the house and locked him
out.
Now Doris's dream of a happy marriage were destroyed. She had to work at
the radio station again to make money to pay for the bills and grocery's.She
then joined a band with Les Brown and had many hits like "Sentimental Journey"
and "My Dream's Are Getting Better all the Time".Soon enough she started
dating George Weidler in the band.Almost after a year of dating he came
up to New York to marry Doris and take her back to California.Doris then
went back to New York to perform at a club that had just opened. After being
married to George for 8 months they had divorced. This left Doris even more
heartbroken then her last divorce.
A couple of days after the divorce Al Levy took Doris to try out for a
movie, but while she was singing she broke down into tears.Jack Carson then
called Doris to congratulate her on getting the part in the movie."Romance
on High Seas" did very well an immediantly Doris started shooting another
movie.
On Doris' 27th birthday,April 3,1951, she married her third husband Marty
Melcher.Doris was married to Marty for 17 years until 1968 when he died.Doris
never married after Marty died.
Opinion:
This book was very suprising to me because it showed how many struggles
she had gone through in her personal and work life.It was also very interesting
to me because she was such a great actress and I have always wondered how
she got started.
