INFORMATION ABOUT SEARCHING
What are online databases and why are they valuabe?

Online databases are resources that cost a yearly subscription fee to access. CHS subscribes to several which are available from our computers and remotely with a username and password. Unlike searching internet sites, these premium databases provide perameters of information and well researched data written by qualified authors. Anne Arundel Public Library, Pratt Public Library and Sailor, a resource of Maryland Libraries, also offer many data bases that are paid for by tax dollars.

How to access databases from home?

  1. Click on the link of the database you wish to access.
  2. When prompted, enter in the username and password. See the library staff for the list of usernames and passwords for these databases.

What are the various kinds of searches and how are they different?

Several examples of searches are subject, key word and natural language.
You can think of a subject search as looking in the card catalog under a particular subject heading. Materials have been cataloged and have been assigned these subject headings. They are in general about that particular subject. A keyword search is much broader. It may bring up resources that merely mention your word in an article.
